Wine Stoppers and Toppers
The next best thing to enjoying a bottle of wine is being able to save opened bottles that you are unable to finish by using wine stoppers. Wine stoppers, or wine toppers, are handy little gadgets for preserving an opened bottle of wine – at least for a few days. Wine toppers come in a huge variety of styles and prices, so they make easy gifts for a wine lover.
Wine stoppers are very useful wine accessories, and it is always nice to have several on hand. A wine bottle stopper usually consists of two parts – the top decoration and the bottom insert. The top is usually decorative in nature, can be made from may different materials, and has a themed shape, such as a golf ball, a heart, or a grape bunch. The bottom insert is inserted into the wine bottle to reduce the amount of oxygen that gets into the bottle. Bottom inserts are also made from many materials, including glass, metal, cork, and rubber.
How Long Will It Keep?
There is no hard and fast rule for how long wine will last when it is topped off with a wine bottle stopper or the original cork. The wine itself affects that greatly – sometimes it will last a few days when stoppered, and sometimes a few weeks. Some wines will taste poorly after 24 hours even if stoppered. Most decent wines will keep for a few days to a week. Be aware that the temperature at which the opened bottle is stored will also affect the oxidation rate.
Look for a wine bottle stopper that has a cork or rubber bottom, or that has rubber rings around the bottom insert. These materials will help give a better seal and may keep your wine longer. You might also try keeping opened, stoppered bottles of wine in the refrigerator or in your wine cooler – yes, even red wines. Once you're ready to finish the bottle, you can let the wine warm a bit before pouring. The cooler temperatures will inhibit the oxidation and bacteria that normally contribute to the spoiling process.
Keep opened bottles of wine upright. This reduces the size of the surface area being exposed to the oxygen that is already in the bottle. A larger exposed area equals a faster oxidation process. You could also pour the leftover wine into a smaller container to further reduce the surface area being exposed to oxygen.
You can re-use the original cork from the bottle. However, those corks are often difficult to get back into the neck of the bottle, and wine stoppers add a bit of beauty to your wine drinking affair.

You can find a wine bottle stopper made from just about every material – cork, wood, ceramic, metal, glass – you name it. The styles range all the way from eclectic to cute to elegant. For example, you can find wine toppers topped with a Lenox crystal knob, a prickly ceramic cactus, a metal hammer, or a metal volume dial (for the music lover in your life). And wine toppers are made in a tremendous array of designs, so if you are looking for the perfect wine accessory gift, consider a new wine bottle stopper or even a set of wine stoppers. Because it is possible to find wine stoppers with just about any theme you can imagine – cars, tools, golf, seashore, hearts, grapes, and so on – these make great gifts for wine drinkers that reflect the recipient's love of wine along with his or her particular hobby or interest.
